The university traces its history back to 1957, when the first group of students was admitted to the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute for the specialty “Industrial and Civil Engineering”. In 1961, recruitment for the specialty “Architecture” was carried out and the corresponding faculties were formed: construction, architecture and sanitary engineering. In 1980, on the basis of these faculties and the Alma-Ata branch of the All-Union Correspondence Civil Engineering Institute, the Alma-Ata Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering (AIACE) was opened. Serekpek Mukashevich Baibolov, an experienced organizer, a major manufacturer, builder, Doctor of Technical Sciences, was appointed the first rector of AIACE.
In 1987, Pavel Alexandrovich Atrushkevich became the rector of AIACE. Under his leadership, the Institute was the first among the universities of Kazakhstan to be certified and accredited in 1991. In 1992, AIACE was renamed the Kazakh State Academy of Architecture and Construction (KAZGASA).
In 2000, Amirlan Aidarbekovich Kussainov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, full member of the American Society of Engineers and Builders and the International Association for Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Foundation Engineering, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Academician of the International Engineering Academy, foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Building Sciences (RAASN) – scientist, teacher, innovator. In 2001, the Kazakh State Academy of Architecture and Construction was renamed the Kazakh Head Architectural and Construction Academy (KAZGASA).
KazGASA is a leading university in Kazakhstan, a recognized scientific and educational center in the Central Asian region, one of the first to pass all stages of the introduction of a credit system of education. For the first time among the universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Board of Trustees, the Board of Customers and expert commissions on specialties, the Laboratory of Educology, the Association of Graduates of Architectural and Construction Specialties (AVASS), etc. have been created.
AIACE -KazGASA is the first specialized university in the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of architecture and construction and, to date, as a basic methodological center, has a huge impact on the development of educational programs in Kazakhstan.
In 2007, he passed the international accreditation in the specialty “Architecture” in UNESCO-ISA (confirmation in 2011). Since 2009, the International Festival of Architecture and Construction Schools of Eurasia has been regularly held under the chairmanship of KAZGASA.
The Kazakh-American University (KAU) was created on the basis of the synthesis of programs of American and Kazakh universities under articulation agreements, with the aim of teaching undergraduate courses in English. The idea belonged to the founder of the university – Amirlan Aidarbekovich Kusainov. September 12, 1997 – the date of formation of the university. KAU was a unique institution synthesizing the best traditions of the Soviet and American educational systems. Since the foundation of the KAU, elements of the credit system have been present in the educational process. The experience of the Kazakh-American University was taken into account when drawing up the Rules of the credit system of education, approved by the order of the Ministry of Education and Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2005. KAU is the first university to introduce the so–called “comments” – monthly reports of teachers on the student’s progress and behavior in front of his parents. At the same time, they began to conduct a Feedback survey of students about the quality of each teacher’s classes. KAU actively introduced new system, technological, managerial and social programs. Since 1997, the University, one of the first among the universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has introduced the process of separating students’ education and monitoring (evaluating) their knowledge; a multi-point letter system of the level of training; an innovative system of remuneration; Hand-outs (active handout); the concept of trilingualism in teaching; universal criteria for a comprehensive assessment of language proficiency; trilingual glossary; defense of theses in English.
The Kazakh Head Architectural and Construction Academy (KAZGASA, year of creation – 1980) and the Kazakh-American University (KAU, year of creation – 1997) in 2007 established an International Educational Corporation in the form of a university as a single educational, scientific and production complex combining educational, scientific, production and other units with the status of legal entity (The Charter was approved by the decision of the General Meeting of the founders of the IEC Protocol No. 1 dated 07.12.2006).
In July 2009, in the process of reorganization, the IEC was registered with the Department of Justice of Almaty as a Joint-Stock Company (certificate of state registration 98672-1910-JSC dated July 02, 2009). In 2014, the IEC successfully passed the State certification for the right to conduct educational activities for a period of 5 years (Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 19.12.2014 No. 1894) in 16 specialties of higher education (bachelor’s degree), 9 specialties of master’s degree, 5 specialties of doctoral studies. In 2015, the IEC was accredited by the Independent Kazakhstan Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NCAOKO) – an institutional and specialized accreditation.
In 2017, the 20th anniversary of the opening of the KAU and the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Faculty of Design were celebrated. In 2018, on the basis of the IOC, an anniversary meeting of the Educational and Methodological Association of the Republican Educational and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held on the specialties of architectural, construction and design profiles – 30 years in the USSR and 25 years in the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2019, according to the results of the rating of educational programs of universities of NCE RK “Atameken”, the IEC occupies a leading position in 8 educational programs.

In 2020, the anniversary of the opening of AASI-KAZGAS was held – 40 years, in 2022 – 25 years of KAU. The university consists of 5 faculties, which employ teachers with academic degrees of Doctor of Sciences, candidates of Sciences, PhD and practical work experience and corresponding qualification requirements. There is a system of reserves for filling vacant positions, which has high requirements for applicants.
The main direction of research activity is participation in solving the main problems of fundamental science, as well as priority areas of industrial and innovation policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The studies comply with the recommendations of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and are focused on the development and creation of potentially competitive, including 9 export-oriented industries operating in non-resource sectors of the economy.
The сorporation is continuously working to expand international relations, agreements on cooperation in the field of education and science have been concluded with foreign universities from Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, Israel, Japan, the USA, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the UAE, South Korea, China, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey and other countries CIS. The IEC has cooperation agreements with 100 leading foreign universities.
The Corporation has a modern material and technical base that meets the requirements of sanitary standards and the requirements of state educational standards of the specialties being implemented, which includes: the main academic building (GUK); the main administrative building (GAK); a sports and recreation complex (SOC); a multifunctional sports ground; a dormitory – Student House (DS).
