Kusainov Amirlan Aidarbekovich

We remember with warmth and sincere respect

Amirlan Aidarbekovich Kusainov was born on September 25, 1957 in Almaty in a family of scientists: linguist Kusainov Aidarbek Nurumovich and doctor Kusainova Gaziza Kaskayevna.
In 1979, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of PSS MISI (Moscow) with a degree in civil engineering. In 1983 he defended his PhD thesis, and in 1993 – his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Discrete-continuum models of dissipative systems of dynamics and seismic resistance” at TSNIISK (Moscow).
He started his career in 1983 . in Alma-Ata Architectural and Construction Institute (AASI): worked as a senior researcher, assistant, associate professor of the Department of “Construction Mechanics”.
In 1987-88, 1991, 1992 he completed a scientific internship at the University of California, Berkeley (USA), Kyoto University (Japan), Jilin University (China).

Since 1991, he has been annually elected a full member of the American Society of Engineers and Builders.

Since 1994 he worked as the head of the Department of “Construction Mechanics”.

In 1995 he was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Kazakhstan, in 1996 – an academician of the International Academy of Higher School.

In 1995-97 he worked in the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan as Deputy Head of the Department of Internal Policy, where he supervised all issues of education. In the same years, he was a member of the Presidium of the State Attestation Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan, worked as a UNESCO expert and chairman of the subgroup of the European Education Foundation. Under the leadership of A. A. Kusainov, 43 legislative and regulatory documents in the field of education in the Republic of Kazakhstan were prepared and published. Amirlan Aidarbekovich was a co-author of a number of new directions in the reform of higher education in Kazakhstan at that time: the consolidation of universities, the credit system of education, a new mechanism for credit financing of universities, the concept of the Eurasian University, the introduction of American and European education programs in Kazakhstan.

In 1997, he was appointed Vice-rector for scientific and methodological work of KAZGAS.

In 1997, A. A. Kusainov was elected President of the newly established Kazakh-American University (KAU) in Kazakhstan on his initiative, which for the first time provides opportunities for obtaining higher education in Kazakhstan (bachelor’s and master’s) in English in accordance with the educational standards of US universities.

In January 2000, he was appointed Rector of the Kazakh State Academy of Architecture and Construction, since 2002 he has been president of the Kazakh Head Architectural and Construction Academy (KAZGAS). Since 2020 – Honorary President of KazLAACE.

In the 2000-2001 academic year, he was elected a full member of the International Association for Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Foundations. In 2001, he completed a scientific internship on earthquake-resistant construction in Turkey.

In 2002, A. A. Kusainov was elected an academician of the International Academy of Engineering, and in 2003 – an academician of the National Academy of Engineering, in 2015 he became an Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

In February 2003, thanks to the efforts of Amirlan Aidarbekovich, the KAU School received the status of a UNESCO Associated School.

In 2007, KazLAACE and KAU established an International Educational Corporation in the form of a university as a single educational, scientific and production complex. The idea belonged to Amirlan Aidarbekovich Kusainov, as a result of which the university received a new round of development. In the strategy of socio-economic development of the university, A.A. Kusainov set tasks aimed at improving the personnel policy, digitalization of the university, organization of the educational process and practice, which subsequently contributed to the soft adaptation of the university to the external conditions of the social environment.

In November 2007 The UNESCO-ISA Accreditation Council in Barcelona decided to accredit the Bachelor of Architecture program of KazLAACE. May 7, 2008 The General Reporter of the UNESCO-ISA Commission, Fernando Ramos, presented the President of the Kazakh Head Architectural and Construction Academy, Amirlan Aidarbekovich Kusainov, with a certificate confirming the compliance of the quality of KazLAACE educational programs with international standards.

In 2009, he initiated and headed the International Festival of Architecture, Construction and Design Schools of Eurasia, which began to be held on a permanent basis. For 10 years, the Kazakh Head Architectural and Construction Academy (KazLAACE), which is part of the International Educational Corporation (IEC), has been bringing together leading specialists of Eurasia in the field of architecture, construction and design on its base. Since then, the festival has traveled to different parts of the world, has steadily grown, expanded and in a very short time has become one of the most significant events in the international community.

In October 2018 Amirlan Aidarbekovich defined the modernized course of development of KazLAACE, outlining it in the Concept of a new stage in the development of architectural and construction education in Kazakhstan, which formed the basis for the strategy of further development of KazLAACE.

In order to study the international education system, the experience and achievements of the world’s universities, Amirlan Aidarbekovich visited 70 universities from 46 countries of the world.

During the years of Amirlan Aidarbekovich’s leadership, fundamental changes took place not only in KaLAACE and KAU, but also in the modern education system, which subsequently had a positive impact on education in the country as a whole. Under the leadership of Amirlan Kusainov, KazLAACE acquired the status of the “head” academy in the field of architecture and construction, passed state certification and accreditation. KazLAACE has become a multi-level educational institution, including a lyceum, a vocational school, a college, bachelor’s, master’s, postgraduate, doctoral and additional education. On the initiative of Amirlan Aidarbekovich, KazLAACE became the first university in Kazakhstan to officially introduce international education standards, including a credit system of education. Under the leadership of Amirlan Kusainov, KAU, being a multi-level educational complex (kindergarten – school – college – bachelor’s degree – master’s degree), became the first university in the post-Soviet space accepted into the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

A. A. Kusainov is a well-known scientist in the field of dynamics and seismic resistance of structures, mechanics of discrete-continuous dissipative systems and the author of alternative methods of dynamic calculation of engineering structures. Under his leadership, a whole galaxy of the most talented young scientists and production workers of the country has grown and joined the science and industrial sector.

A. A. Kusainov is the author of more than 150 scientific and methodological and socio–educational works, including 105 scientific and 38 methodological works, 4 monographs, 4 textbooks, a 4-volume Russian-English-Kazakh dictionary, 10 copyright certificates and patents. Author of the monograph “Methods of accounting for internal friction in dynamic calculations of structures” (co–authored with A. I. Tseitlin – 16 P.L.), republished abroad in English twice: in Oxford and Balkema publishing houses; monograph “Alternatives to the standard method of superposition of vibrations” (co-authored with Ray Clough) in English, published in the proceedings of the International Center for Research on Earthquake-Resistant Construction in California (Berkeley).

Amirlan Kusainov – Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NAS RK), full member of the American Society of Engineers and Builders and the International Association for Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Foundation Engineering, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Academician of the International Academy of Engineering, foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences (RAASN), honorary builder of Kazakhstan.

He was awarded with Gratitude from the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.A.
